April 14, 2014, ChicagoLatham & Watkins LLP is pleased to announce that David Callahan has joined the firm’s Chicago office as a partner in the Litigation Department. Callahan’s practice focuses on complex litigation in the areas of patent, trademark, trade secret, false advertising and unfair competition.  Callahan’s addition to the firm’s litigation team comes on the heels of the addition of John Sikora, a former SEC official, to the Chicago office, and continues a pattern of national growth for the firm’s intellectual property litigation group.

Callahan has more than 20 years of experience litigating intellectual property matters, has tried numerous bench and jury trials, and has argued many appeals before the Federal and Seventh Circuit Courts of Appeal. He has particularly significant experience in the area of medical device patent disputes, and has represented clients in a diverse range of other technologies including semiconductors, consumer products, automotive products, and business methods among many others.

“Latham’s IP litigation practice is among the finest in the United States; a fully integrated national team. The trial-ready group we’ve built excels at crafting strategies that use the legal tools at our disposal to advance our clients’ business objectives. Dave’s sterling track record of trying and winning high-stakes cases broadens our trial capabilities and enhances the caliber of our practice.  We’re proud to have Dave join us,” said Max Grant, former Global Co-Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group. Grant noted that over the past four years the firm has hand-picked 16 leading patent litigation partners to add to its Northern California, Washington D.C. and New York offices.

Sean Berkowitz, Global Chair of the firm’s Litigation Department added: “We are pleased to add another highly skilled and well-established trial lawyer to the team. Dave has tremendous experience representing companies in high-profile trials with an impressive track record of success.  He is a valuable addition to our global IP team and to our deep bench of litigators in the Chicago office who handle high-profile matters in a multitude of industries ranging from complex IP matters to highly contentious environmental matters.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Dave to our Chicago office. Dave’s addition, particularly following so closely behind John Sikora’s arrival, further solidifies our deep footprint in the Chicago legal market and demonstrates the depth and caliber of the Chicago office’s litigation team,” said Brad Kotler, Office Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins in Chicago.

“One of the things that drew me to Latham was the breadth of its IP litigation group and the collaborative way its partners build teams tailored to the client’s needs. Latham & Watkins offers a unique global platform and seamlessly integrated practices that will enable me to expand my practice and play a major part in driving the growth of the entire IP practice in Chicago and firmwide. The firm’s commitment to this practice has enabled them to build a premier group of practitioners that I am pleased to join,” said Callahan.

The IP Litigation Practice Group at Latham & Watkins now consists of more than 115 attorneys, including 35 partners.

Callahan received his law degree from University of Michigan Law School in 1991.  He received his AB from the University of Chicago with honors in 1987.
