Harry and David were born at the turn of the twentieth century to immigrant parents in the Irish Channel of New Orleans. They formed the groundwork of the law practice by their exemplary work ethic and compassion for the common man, which earned the firm a reputation in the New Orleans community for promoting the rights of all citizens.

The history of Herman Herman & Katz

Throughout the 1950s and '60s, Harry Herman argued cases that had a strong positive impact on public school integration and the rights of women and minorities. Defending the rights of all people formed the groundwork of Herman,Herman & Katz , and remains the cornerstone of the firm today. 

Following in their father's footsteps toward excellence, Russ and Maury Herman, along with their law partners - Morton Katz, Steven Lane, Leonard Davis, Stephen Herman, Brian Katz and James Klick - have brought HH&K's reputation to a national level. 

In the early 1970s, HH&K litigated the first personal injury case resulting from faulty hotel security, the "Howard Johnson Sniper case." The damages recovered set a precedent by transforming the standards of hotel security on a national scale. In another landmark case, we successfully brought the engineers, contractors and insurers of Lloyds of London to justice, opening a new avenue for recovering damages done to historic French Quarter buildings. 

Since its inception, the firm has been a leader in litigation on a national scale, against leading pharmaceutical and manufacturing companies. 

In 1994, HH&K, along with 60 other law firms, brought tobacco companies to court to recover Medicare costs and other economic damages incurred because of tobacco-related disease and death. We were the lead negotiating firm in the Ieyoub, ex rel. Louisiana v. American Tobacco Company litigation, which resulted in a $4.6 billion recovery.
