- All Dolled Up
It's Toy Story (the Lawyer's Deluxe Edition) out in Riverside, California, right now, where John Quinn (aka Buzz Lightyear) and Tom Nolan (aka Woody) are squaring off over dolls. You read that right.
Quinn and Nolan are two of the biggest corporate trial lawyers in California and the nation and have been tapped by Mattel and MGA, respectively, to knock one another's blocks off over the Bratz doll line. The two are perfectly cast for the reprise, with Quinn representing a company that covets the rights to the hot dolls in the face of its own woes. Mattel claims MGA stole the idea for the Posh Spice-looking Bratz dolls, which feature oversize heads with pouty lips atop undersize bodies. The battle revolves around a toy designer, Carter Bryant, who was or was not employed by Mattel at the time he created Bratz. (And, of course, John Keker must make an appearance in this story. He represented Carter Bryant, the designer. Mattel dropped its suit against Bryant on the eve of trial.)
Hundreds of millions could be at stake in the Bratz franchise, whose worth MGA has pegged at $2B.
