  • President Goes with Haag for No. Cal. Job

President Obama wants Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe partner Melinda Haag to be the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, and she will succeed Bush appointee Joseph Russoniello if confirmed by the Senate. Haag is on our list of Finalists for the Lawdragon 500, and she made our 2008 guide for her white-collar expertise, as you can see on her Lawdragon listing. Haag handled a bunch of stock-option backdating cases, including getting an acquittal for McKesson’s former CFO.

The Recorder reports that observers feel Russoniello did not bring enough big white-collar cases, though he brought some stability to the officer after the Kevin Ryan’s tumultuous tenure. He’s faced defense bar criticisms for tough policies on low-level drug offenders and illegal immigrants. Sen. Barbara Boxer said Haag “is well-respected in the California legal community and will bring more than two decades of experience handling white-collar crime cases to the U.S. Attorney's Office."
