- Tribe in New Role
Constitutional law scholar Laurence Tribe, one of the best known liberal legal academics, may not be entirely happy with his new Justice Department role after taking a leave of absence from Harvard Law School. Tribe was a teacher and mentor to President Obama and is now working as the Justice Department’s “senior counselor for access to justice.” The administration is not letting him do interviews, which the Times story speculates is because they don’t want him drawing attention to himself. Harvard law professor Charles Ogletree hinted that Tribe’s talents may be being wasted in the role, which is still being ironed out. “He’s capable of doing a lot more than he’ll probably be asked to do,” Ogletree said.
Officials speaking anonymously in the Times story suggested it was hard to find a role in the government for Tribe because Republicans would really go after him during the confirmation process, as Tribe was vocal in the opposition to the Robert Bork nomination. Virginia Sloan, the president of the Constitution Project, doubted Tribe could have a great effect on access to justice given that he can’t control resources given for public defenders.
