- Class-Action List Released
RiskMetrics Group’s Securities Class Action Services (SCAS) has released its annual roundup of the leading plaintiffs firms – the SCAS 50 report – when it comes to scoring securities class-action settlements. The SCAS report is something Lawdragon likes to look at for our guides; it certainly came in handy when we were putting together our 2008 feature 100 Lawyers You Need to Know in Securities Litigation (even though that focused on individual lawyers and not firms).
This year’s leader was Coughlin Stoia Geller Rudman & Robbins, which is now Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd. The firm earned about $1.58 billion in settlements in 2009, followed by $1.44 billion earned by Milberg LLP. Bernstein Liebhard was the third firm totaling more than a billion dollars in settlements, with about $1.08 billion, and it came in first in terms of average value per settlement at about $255 million. The firm had just four settlements in total, while Coughlin Stoia had 34. Adam Savett, the director of SCAS, noted in his quick take on the results that there are “more and more ‘non-traditional’ securities litigation firms” on the list, such as Motley Rice.
