  • Lawdragon Stars on Obama’s Short List

Not surprisingly, many lawyers and judges who have made our Lawdragon 500 guides are now being considered for the vacancy that will be created by outgoing Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, himself a member of this year's Finalists. The latest is 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Ann Claire Williams, who made our first (and so far only) Lawdragon 500 guide to the nation’s leading judges. The Chicago Tribune has a short profile of Williams, the first African American to serve on the 7th Circuit. She is the second judge from the 7th Circuit that President Obama is taking a look at – the first widely mentioned name is another Lawdragon leading judge, Diane Wood.

One of the finalists for our upcoming list, Solicitor General Elena Kagan, is another strong candidate, as is Merrick Garland, a two-time member of our guides who sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals, DC Circuit. CBS News had an updated short list.
