- AG worst AG in memory?
Sure, there have been some clunkers, but Alberto Gonzales would have to make the short list. Now we find out that the guy played fast and loose with the facts right until the end - President Bush accepted his resignation on Friday afternoon, but when the NYT called on Saturday to ask about rumors of an impending resignation, the attorney general directed his spokesman to deny, deny, deny. From Dana Milbank in the Washington Post:
For a man accused of lying to Congress, it was a fitting way to go out. Equally emblematic was the way in which Gonzales announced his departure yesterday morning. From "good morning" to "God bless America," he spoke for all of one minute and 41 seconds -- during which he managed to consult his written statement 26 times and to avoid saying a single word about the roiling scandals that finally forced him to quit. He entered the Justice Department conference room with a grin and departed without taking any of the questions shouted at his back: "Why are you leaving?""Why now?" "Why did you deny the resignation?"
Then there was the grammatical error in the second sentence of his resignation letter - "My family and I" instead of "my family and me." It's a cheap shot, of course, the kind of thing no one would have paid any attention to had the guy been a straight shooter on everything else. (Slate)
