- A cold, cruel August
Just how bad was it in the M&A world? Through Aug. 30, companies and private-equity firms struck 2,496 deals world-wide valued at $193 billion, according to Dealogic. That compares with $544 billion worth of deals in July - and perhaps more significantly, it's down 25 percent from August 2006 (Augusts are typically slow). Much of the falloff can be attributed to the private equity business, which pretty much took a powder during the month. Here's a pretty amazing factoid, courtesy of Deal Journal: August had just three leverage buyouts valued at more than $1 billion announced. In May, there were 26.
