- Always fess up to the feds
How many times do we have to keep saying that? Oh sure, baseball slugger Barry Bonds has only been indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs. But if we've learned anything through the years – from Alger Hiss to Martha Stewart - it's that while the underlying crime might not land you in the slammer, lying about it surely could. Bonds's attorney says the feds are after Bonds any way possible, and perjury is often easier to prove than, say, insider trading or illegally backdating stock options. The indictment, coming three months after Bonds passed Hank Aaron to become baseball’s career home-run leader, makes you wonder what future, if any, he has in the Big Leagues. He's not been convicted and the case is probably months down the road, but he's currently without team and you have to wonder what franchise will want all the headaches. (NYT)
