Featured Legal News (Dec. 14, ‘06) Judgement for Executionee's Family Posted on Thursday, December 14, 2006 It took about 46 years, but the South Florida family of a man who was executed after Fidel Castro took power says it's happy with a $400 million default judgment against Cuba. The country never responded to the lawsuit. Just about everybody agrees that getting any of the money is not going to be easy. "Cuba will come to the table and have to deal with all the families that have suffered," said the lawyer for the family, Alfonso Perez. Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Thomas Wilson Jr. found that Cuba violated anti-torture laws in the torture and firing-squad killing of Robert Fuller, whose family had an agricultural business in Cuba. He was a dual citizen of Cuba and the United States when he was arrested for counterrevolutionary activities. His body was never found. Some civil actions against Cuba have resulted in the recovery of funds, usually from frozen assets in the United States. Tell us what you think by visiting our comments page.
