George won true third-branch status for California’s judiciary through budgetary and structural autonomy

As Chief Justice of California, Ronald George has aggressively campaigned for funding to add more judges and courthouse security. He also has worked tirelessly to ensure that the poor have better access to legal representation, including in 1999 securing a $10 million appropriation for the Equal Access Fund, a grant-making body that supports 100 legal services. Also known for his personal touch and willingness to work in the trenches, he's "the only chief justice who has ever personally visited every county courthouse" in California. Fellow judges and lawyers look to George as "the standard we all shoot for" and a "judge who was in total control of the courtroom" since he presided over the famous "Hillside Strangler" case 30 years ago. In that case, George stood "tough on crime" when he refused to let the Los Angeles district attorney drop the case against the man who murdered 10 women. George even personally interviewed witnesses. The result: a conviction of guilty and lawyers and a jury who "thought the world of him."
