Dennis Archer has achieved a lot since he graduated from Detroit College of Law 35 years ago. He served as a Michigan Supreme Court justice from 1986 to 1990, and as Detroit mayor from 1994 to 2001. He also was the first African-American to serve as president of the American Bar Association. In 2002, Archer settled into his current job: chairman of Dickinson Wright, a 200-lawyer firm based in Detroit. Since then, he has stayed in the public eye. A federal judge in 2004 appointed Archer guardian for civil rights leader Rosa Parks. Archer's job was to protect her interests in a defamation and trademark-infringement case over the use of Parks' name in a song by the rap group Outkast, and the case settled in 2005.
