Abourezk undertook a national class action, inspired by his sister’s terminal cancer battle, against insurance companies for underpaying benefits to cancer patients.

Many lawyers in South Dakota have a hard time getting noticed, but not Mike Abourezk. The Association of Trial Lawyers of America recently honored the plaintiffs' lawyer for launching a battle against an insurance company on behalf of 1,200 cancer patients. The class action, which accused Central States Health & Life of refusing to cover expenses for cancer patients, settled for $20 million in 2003. Abourezk started his crusade against the Nebraska insurer to help his sister, Carol Abourezk, who was diagnosed with cancer in 1997 and died two years later. In 2004, he won a $12 million verdict for a client who sued insurers after they denied her workers' compensation claim.
