Corporate Board Member magazine recognized Peter Atkins in 1998 as one of the 10 best lawyers to have on your side in the event of a hostile takeover. He played a role in the landmark $25 billion leveraged buyout of RJR Nabisco by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts in 1989, when he advised RJR's board of directors on the deal. Atkins was one of the lawyers featured in the book "Barbarians at the Gate," which describes the story behind the hostile takeover. The corporate lawyer also has been a player in other major transactions. He served as financial adviser to Sprint in its proposed $129 billion merger with WorldCom in 1999, a deal that ultimately collapsed. Atkins also represented Time in its 1989 acquisition of Warner Communications for $14 billion.
