Antitrust lawyer William Baer has scored some prominent victories during his 30-year legal career. While at Arnold & Porter, he defended General Electric in a price-fixing case brought by the government, winning an acquittal for his client in 1994. Soon after, he became director of the Federal Trade Commission's bureau of competition. In that position, he oversaw a 1997 case in which the FTC blocked the proposed $4 billion merger of Staples and Office Depot. In 2000, Baer returned to Arnold & Porter, where he leads the firm's antitrust practice. In 2003, Baer helped drug company Pfizer get regulatory approval for its $56 billion acquisition of Pharmacia. He was named the nation's best antitrust lawyer by Corporate Board Member magazine in 2001.
