As head of the Mississippi Center for Justice, Martha Bergmark is in the eye of the storm, coordinating her community's response to the administrative and legal needs created by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The crisis is the latest challenge for Bergmark, who has spent more than 30 years fighting for civil rights and equal justice. As a public interest lawyer in Mississippi, she labored to end racial segregation and helped establish the state's volunteer legal infrastructure. Bergmark spent 15 years in Washington, D.C., at the National Legal Aid and Defender Association and the Legal Services Corporation before returning to her home state. Her center provides a range of legal services to Mississippi's low-income and disadvantaged residents while advocating for social justice.
