EDITORIAL REVIEW
With about a dozen oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court under his belt, Paul Smith is one of the nation's top appellate attorneys. As a partner in Jenner & Block's Washington, D.C., office, Smith serves as the co-chair of the firm's appellate and Supreme Court practice, and the media and First Amendment practice. He has tackled a number of significant free speech cases at the Supreme Court level, like United States v. American Library Association, which involved a First Amendment challenge to the Children's Internet Protection Act of 2000, which required libraries to install Internet filtering software on their computers. Smith also specializes in redistricting appeals and voting-rights cases, though his most high-profile case was Lawrence v. Texas, in which Smith successfully challenged the constitutionality of the state's anti-sodomy statute. Smith is also the lawyer of choice for the video gaming industry, which turns to him when states like Illinois and Washington try to violate its free speech rights by banning the sale of allegedly violent video games.
