EDITORIAL REVIEW
Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation to the 2nd U.S. District Court of Appeals was quite contentious, with conservatives complaining that the Clinton appointee's view that the law should evolve through independent judicial interpretation smacked of judicial activism. Still, no one could deny her amazing intellect, which was obvious from an early age. The Yale Law School graduate, who grew up in the Bronx projects, started off her legal career at the New York County District Attorney's Office. She later went into private practice, but not for long: Sotomayor was appointed to the U.S. District Court in New York at the mere age of 37. She was promoted to the federal appeals court just five years later, where she has served since 1998. She was the first Puerto Rican woman appointed to a circuit court. Many court watchers believe that she's "on the fast track to the U.S. Supreme Court."
