Karen Dyer's main practice area is commercial litigation, including complex federal litigation, civil RICO, antitrust and bankruptcy. Ms. Dyer was recently listed for the second consecutive year in Lawdragon's 500 Leading Lawyers in America.
In 2009, Ms. Dyer participated, presenting defense witnesses and arguing legal points, in the firm's trial victory for Starr International Company against AIG in federal court in New York in a dispute over the ownership of billions of dollars of AIG stock. Ms. Dyer also represents a European based private equity firm in a dispute over the acquisition of a major record company involving approximately $7 billion and represents other European based private equity/venture capital groups in major disputes. In addition, Ms. Dyer is involved in two actions in New York representing the 50% owner of a multi-billion dollar soft drink company. She also represents certain family members in a dispute involving a major sporting goods chain. Ms. Dyer has, for a number of years, represented a major tobacco company in litigation throughout Florida and recently obtained summary judgment in two multi-million dollar actions, one of which has already been affirmed on appeal. She is also involved in a constitutional dispute in Florida over legislative redistricting, and summary judgment in favor of her client was recently upheld on appeal by the Eleventh Circuit. Ms. Dyer also obtained a temporary injunction, which ultimately resulted in a permanent injunction, enjoining the dissemination of materials depicting the death of a whale trainer at SeaWorld in 2010.
Ms. Dyer previously has been involved in representing the former principal owners of a speech and language technology company in district court and bankruptcy proceedings against another speech and language technology company and its former officers, directors, auditors and bankers arising out of a $600 million merger between the two companies. Ms. Dyer also has been involved in representing Tyco and its ADT subsidiary and has worked to successfully defeat certification of two nationwide classes against Tyco/ADT. Additionally, Ms. Dyer has been involved in jury and non-jury trials for companies such as Florida Power & Light and Tyco/ADT, and along with another of the firm's partners, obtained a complete victory for ADT in a bench trial where a former ADT dealer sought a multi-million dollar judgment. Ms. Dyer and others from the firm also represented an independent power producer in action taken against a state utility alleging violations of RICO and various state laws. The settlement resulted in an award in excess of $36 million for the producer.
Before joining Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP in 1997, Ms. Dyer was a partner in a small litigation boutique based in New York. She was a founding partner of the law firm of Mathis & Dyer P.A. and, prior to that, worked as an attorney with the law firm of Carlton, Fields, Ward, Emmanuel, Smith & Cutler P.A. Ms. Dyer also participated in successfully defending a large hospital group against anti-trust claims lodged by another hospital that initially sought to enjoin Ms. Dyer's client's merger with another hospital group.
Ms. Dyer has lectured on the topics of class action litigation and federal civil procedure.
