How did you come to hold your present position (specifically, what led you to become a legal recruiter, marketing consultant, etc.)?
Executive Search Career led to starting my own company and specializing in law firms. After several years in assisting law firms in the executive search capacity and developing, specifically, strategies to other new markets, primarily California but also New York and D.C., our business shifted. More sophisticated client demands led to more highly developed strategy initiatives, creating firm architecture and influencing individual leadership education. Mergers of law firms, and acquisition of larger and more impactful practice groups by our clients, balance our strategy practice.
 
What is the best thing about working with lawyers?
Lawyers, at their best, are deep, wide thinkers, whose interests in, and outside, the law cause them to be committed individuals with a wide range of interests. They are, therefore, more fun to play and work with in general then executives in other areas of business. In addition, most of our clients are the Managing Partners, and while, in a 25-year career there are a number of frogs to kiss, for the most part they are devoted to their firms and are creative, dynamic, intelligent and thoughtful.
 
What is the worst thing about working with lawyers?
All our clients are CEOs, which means, like us, they are TYPE A personalities. Especially in mergers or large high level deals it takes a lot of adrenaline and often late hours to create the bold futures the market now demands.
 
What has been the most satisfying moment of your career thus far?
The original creation of my business in the early 1980s, selling the idea of exclusive, retained searches to the most prominent and sophisticated clients, primarily NYC firms developing offices in L.A. and the Bay area. And, simultaneously, creating a company to support that growth. In addition, in 2001, re-creating our original business model to focus on strategic initiatives at the highest level by adding the incomparable Ralph Savarese as a partner.
 
What are your favorite activities outside the law?
Family, grandchildren, writing, teaching, public speaking especially in terms of developing the next generation of leaders and young entrepreneurs. Yoga, horseback riding, hiking and tons of reading, and keeping up with the busy lives of great friends.
