How did you come to hold your present position (specifically, what led you to become a legal recruiter, marketing consultant, etc.)?
In the late 1990's we became the world leader in law firm communications, representing over half of the AmLaw 100 and more than a third of the Global 100. With a high trust level, many of our legal clients began referring their clients – countries and companies facing a hostile media. In time, we became the nation’s top ranked crisis communications and litigation communications firm.

What is the best thing about working with lawyers?
| Lawyers are a critical addition to the litigation and crisis management teams. Their counsel on the legal risks surrounding every contingency is indispensable.
At their best, lawyers are keenly aware and respectful of the fact that they do not make the final decision. That decision must be a collective one involving multiple non-legal as well as legal considerations. The best lawyers know how to work as a team with other professionals -- public and diplomatic affairs, investor relations, and internet, brand and crisis communications -- to make the best decisions for clients. In short, they think like the client. |

What is the worst thing about working with lawyers?
High-stakes communications during crises and litigation can bring out the worst as well as the best in lawyers. The worst lawyers in a crisis situation are the ones who fail to grasp a crucial fact, which is that there is often more than a legal outcome at stake. In fact, a successful result in a court of law can torpedo the client’s reputation in the Court of Public Opinion – where the jurors happen to be the client’s customers, analysts, and shareholders.

What has been the most satisfying moment of your career thus far?
Our work on Guantanamo Bay, the Catholic Church, and the big three recalls of the past year -- pet food, spinach, and toys. Being a part of history is always exceptionally gratifying.

What are your favorite activities outside the law?
Reading and listening to books having nothing to do with work; cooking; walking and exercise in general; and most importantly, time with the family.
