Best moment of career:
Helping conceive the "UPREIT" structure for REITs in 1993, which enabled the US REIT industry to achieve its dramatic increase in market capitalization and general investment recognition over the last 15 years.

Worst moment of career:
Bankruptcy of long-time client NVR, a US homebuilder, in 1992 -- it had a happy ending though: when NVR emerged from bankruptcy in 1993, its equity traded at $3/share, and since then has traded over $900/share and it's one of the most respected homebuilders in the US.

Attorney you most admire:
Hon. John G. Roberts, Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court -- a friend and a former partner at Hogan. He is brilliant, fair-minded and just a terrific person all around.

Favorite activities (besides the Law):
Skiing, hiking, golf and travel (which has turned out to be a good thing, given the demands of this job).

Favorite Sports Team (if you have one), or Favorite Theater or Museum, etc:
University of Kentucky Wildcats -- even though I went to Princeton, I grew up in Kentucky and am a die-hard Wildcat fan.

What is your proudest accomplishment on behalf of your firm:
If I understand the question, having the confidence and support of my partners to enable me to continue to practice while leading the firm.

If there is one thing you could do over as managing partner/chairperson, what is it?
I would have pushed for term limits on being Chairman :-)

Is there anything - an individual, a double espresso, a good 4:30 a.m. workout - you consider essential to your success?
Working out to start the day -- makes all the difference -- and having a good sense of humor!
