PROFILE
Maury A. Herman is a partner of Herman, Herman, Katz & Cotlar, L.L.P., and the managing partner of that national firm HERMAN GEREL, LLP, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on April 3, 1944, Mr. Herman received his Juris Doctorate from Tulane University School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1968. He won the Moot Court Competition in 1968 and, from 1967 to 1968, clerked for Judge Luther Hall at the Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Immediately upon graduation from law school, Mr. Herman joined his father, Harry Herman, and uncle, David Herman, in the family practice of Herman & Herman. In 1984, the name of the firm was changed to the present day Herman, Herman, Katz & Cotlar, L.L.P.Mr. Herman is a sustaining member of the American Association for Justice, a Diplomat of Trial Advocacy of the National College of Advocacy, and has served on numerous occasions as a faculty member the various trial colleges sponsored by the National College of Advocacy. Mr. Herman is a past president of the Louisiana Association for Justice and currently a member of the Board of Governors and Executive Committee. HHK&C is among 60 law firms comprising the Plaintiffs' Legal Committee of the Castano Tobacco Class Action. Mr. Herman serves as a member of the PLC's Finance Committee, Administrative Committee, and the Public Relations Committee. HHK&C is also a member of the trial team representing Richard Ieyoub, Attorney General for the State of Louisiana, in Louisiana's claim against the tobacco industry. Mr. Herman has appeared as a speaker on trial practice, ethics and professionalism and has authored numerous papers on these subjects. Mr. Herman serves as chair of the Plaintiffs' Legal Committee in the MDL entitled In re Express Scripts, Inc., PBM Litigation, Master Case Number 4:05-MD-01672-SNL.
Mr. Herman's practice includes personal injury; commercial litigation; banking; wills, trusts and estates; real estate; maritime; professional negligence; medical negligence and complex litigation, including class actions. He is also currently a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Louisiana Association for Justice. He is the past Chairman of the New Orleans Central Business District Historic District Lankmarks Commission and was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of a Louisiana community bank. Mr. Herman served as a member of the Board of Trustees of WYES Television, the local Public Broadcasting Station. He was general counsel of the New Orleans Saints National Football League from 1986 through 1993. Through new ownership, which included members of the firm, he and his law partners were instrumental in keeping the team in New Orleans.
