New York, NY, May 5, 2014 – Herschel S. Weinstein joined Lowenstein Sandler LLP today as Senior Counsel and Vice-Chair of its Life Sciences Group. Mr. Weinstein has more than 30 years of experience as in-house and outside counsel to the pharmaceutical industry.  He most recently served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Forest Laboratories, the New York Stock Exchange listed specialty pharmaceutical company with more than $4 billion in annual revenue.  Mr. Weinstein will be resident in Lowenstein’s New York office.

Mr. Weinstein established the in-house legal function at Forest.  As general counsel, he was responsible for every significant licensing, collaboration and acquisition transaction, all significant litigation and regulatory proceedings, responses to major proxy challenges, and legal support for all functions of the organization.  At Lowenstein, Mr. Weinstein will advise the firm’s life science’s clients on corporate and securities law, licensing and joint-venture transactions, and effective compliance with health care law and regulations, as well as counsel the firm’s clients on the broader range of legal issues that in-house attorneys typically face.

“Our strategy is to add strength to strength, broadening and deepening the expertise and experience level that we offer to our clients in the life sciences and pharmaceuticals industries,” said Gary M. Wingens, Lowenstein Sandler’s chairman and managing partner. “Herschel understands what a GC needs and knows how to deliver it.  We are confident that our clients will appreciate his seasoned, knowledgeable, and hands-on approach.”

“Our Life Sciences practice has been growing dramatically, gaining exciting new corporate, transactional and securities work and counseling clients on strategic developments that impact their research capabilities, clinical pipelines and sales, marketing and commercial efforts,” said Michael Lerner, Chair of the Life Sciences Group. “In the past year we have handled a significant number of public company financings, including a number of initial public offerings, and we anticipate an active year ahead given the changing healthcare landscape.  Herschel will add a dynamic new dimension to the growth of our practice, provide expert counsel with an insider’s view, and we expect he’ll be a great senior mentor for our lawyers, as well.”

“The life sciences practice has amassed an impressive record representing top global and emerging pharmaceutical firms,” said Mr. Weinstein. “I’ve known Lowenstein Sandler’s work for years and have tremendous respect for its lawyers. Gary and Michael have a true commitment and an ambitious plan for growing the practice, and I am excited to be a part of it.”

Mr. Weinstein earned his J.D. at Harvard Law School, and his A.B. cum laude at Brandeis University.
