NEW YORK (May 6, 2014) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Cynthia Shoss, partner and co-leader of the firm’s insurance practice, was presented with the Association of Life Insurance Counsel’s (ALIC) 2014 Buist M. Anderson Distinguished Service Award at the organization’s Annual Meeting. Ms. Shoss is the first woman and only the second private practice lawyer to receive the award, which is given to long-standing ALIC members who have provided outstanding service to the Association and to the life insurance bar, the life insurance industry, or colleagues in the life insurance bar.

“Receiving this award is a tremendous honor—a lifetime achievement—for which I am grateful to the ALIC Board, my mentors in the profession and my clients in the life insurance industry,” said Ms. Shoss.

Ms. Shoss has served as a member of the ALIC Board, Co-Chair of the ALIC Membership Committee, Co-Chair of the ALIC Diversity Committee and Chair of the ALIC Insurance Section. Additionally, she has delivered numerous written and oral presentations at ALIC meetings, ACLI Annual Compliance and ACLI Annual Membership Meetings, LICONY Annual Compliance and LICONY Annual Conference Meetings and American Fraternal Alliance Annual Meetings, among other industry events. She has served as a board member of the Compliance and Ethics Forum for Life Insurers, board member of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation, on the board of overseers and as an executive committee member of the School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business of St. John’s University, member of the International Insurance Society, certified assessor of the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association, and board member and vice president of the Risk Foundation.

Ms. Shoss is a nationally recognized adviser on insurance regulatory matters including transformative transactions such as demutualizations, mergers, conversions, and other restructurings and acquisitions. She assists clients with legislation, examinations and investigations, and with compliance, governance and investment issues. Her clients operate in various insurance sectors including life insurance, property/casualty insurance, health insurance and workers’ compensation. She has worked with Fortune 500 companies, state departments of insurance and attorneys general, investment bankers and multinational clients.
