500-button.jpg

We're proud to introduce the lawyers of the year – the 2012 Lawdragon 500. Our seventh annual compendium of the nation’s lawyers of the moment brings together those counselors who won the biggest verdicts and pulled off the biggest deals. Our heads were swimming as we factored in LIBOR to AIG, GM (and other federal government de-leveragings), BP's asset sell-off and other energy sector dealmaking to gay marriage and healthcare consolidation following the Supreme Court decision upholding Obamacare.

At the end of the day, it seemed Obama's second term also signaled a resurgence of lawyering in Washington, D.C. This year's lawyers of the year recognize numerous stellar lawyers in the Obama administration as well as many high-court advocates – led by former Solicitor General Ted Olson and current SG Donald Verrilli, who unexpectedly won healthcare. Joining them on this year's list are veterans of the Justice Department and DC firms who have hundreds of arguments among them. Naturally, our annual nod to the greatest lawyers in the land would be quite incomplete without recognition of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices. After all, many of our top lawyers practice in their house.

As in past years, the most elite guide in the legal profession was chosen from a combination of submissions from law firms; votes and comments through our online voting form; and our own editorial research, which remains the most important factor in the selection process. The guide below will be featured in our annual print magazine to be released in the middle of 2013. Thanks again to all who participated!
