For nearly two decades, Alex Roberts has built his trial practice on the bedrock principles of leadership and service.

Drawing from his background as judicial clerk and AmeriCorps Member, Roberts brings a multifaceted perspective to his advocacy, recognizing the role of careful discernment and steadfast dedication it takes to be an effective courtroom advocate. In recent years, Roberts has navigated the complexities of high-stakes litigation, securing notable victories such as a $438 million jury verdict and antitrust judgment on behalf of a global technology plaintiff, acting as co-counsel in a landmark $5 billion antitrust case, and an attorney immunity victory in the Texas Supreme Court on behalf of an AmLaw 100 law firm. These experiences underscore his proficiency in providing resolutions to intricate legal challenges, positioning him as a trusted advisor for clients seeking solutions to their most pressing problems.

Roberts’s practice spans a diverse array of legal arenas. He represents both plaintiffs and defendants in fiduciary litigation, business disputes, employment, trade secret, products liability matters, to name a few. He has deep experience in the oil and gas and other energy-related industries, representing midsize and multinational clients across the energy value chain, litigating contract and partnership disputes, indemnity claims, personal injury cases, seismicity issues, and royalty disputes in jurisdictions across Texas, surrounding states, and in international arbitration. Beyond energy, his industry experience includes professional services, private equity, construction, and real estate sectors, ensuring comprehensive representation tailored to the unique needs of each client.

From allegations of fraud and conspiracy to complex legal malpractice cases, Roberts’s track record speaks volumes, having represented solo practitioners, boutique law firms, and leading legal entities. Alex has served as an expert witness, speaker, and thought leader on topics related to attorney professional liability, including co-authoring Legal Malpractice in Texas (Third Edition) with David J. Beck in 2018, a preeminent authority widely referenced by practitioners across the country. Complementing his professional endeavors, Alex is deeply committed to fostering equity and inclusion within the legal profession.

Representative Experience

  • Represented Tempur Sealy International, Inc. in defending against the Federal Trade Commission’s attempt to block its $5 billion acquisition of Mattress Firm Group. As co-counsel with Cleary Gottlieb, secured a Texas federal court ruling denying the FTC’s motion, allowing the deal to proceed despite regulatory opposition.   • Represented HP, Inc. in pursuing price fixing antitrust claims against optical disk drive manufacturer Quanta Storage in Houston federal court. With partner Alistair Dawson, secured $438 million judgment for HP, which was upheld on appeal, Hewlett-Packard Co.. v. Quanta Storage, Inc., 961 F.3d 731 (5th Cir 2020).
  • Represented Cameron International Corporation (blowout preventer manufacturer) in the Gulf oil spill Multidistrict Litigation. After six weeks of trial, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana found that Cameron was not liable to any claimant and entered an order completely dismissing Cameron from the litigation.
  • Represented individual pension holders pursuing fraud claims against brokerage firm in jury trial in federal court. Obtained a jury verdict of several million dollars. Case settled on appeal.
  • Defended Texas­-based AM Law 100 firm in case involving allegations of fraud and conspiracy. Alex obtained dismissal of claims against law firm under new Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 91a. The dismissal was affirmed on appeal.
  • Represented electrical subcontractor in Florida arbitration pursuing claims against general contractor for breach of contract and fraud. 
  • Defended private equity firm against claims of trade secret misappropriation in Texas state court.
  • First­-chair jury trial in a federal inmate abuse civil rights lawsuit. Secured favorable plaintiff’s verdict for pro bono client following three­-day trial.
  • Obtained take­-nothing judgment in favor of firm client, Meritage Homes, in first-chair bench trial in Harris County.
  • Represented top 10 Fortune 500 company in trademark infringement lawsuit in Texas federal court.
  • Represented top 10 Fortune 500 company in employment lawsuit. A former company executive brought suit seeking damages for stock incentive awards.
  • Represented boutique law firm in a legal malpractice action in Texas federal court arising out of a copyright infringement action.
  • Represented boutique Florida law firm in legal malpractice action in Harris County brought by former client.
  • Represented defendants in housing discrimination lawsuit in Houston federal court over the sale of a multi­-million dollar home.
