“At all times, you have to think quickly about the now and what’s coming around the next curve,” says Jason M. Kroot, partner at Cavanagh Sorich Law Group and longtime amateur auto racer. He sees clear parallels between his two passions, racing and advocating for victims of personal injury and medical malpractice.

For more than two decades, Kroot has built a reputation for tireless advocacy and meticulous case preparation. His work has resulted in some of the most significant personal injury verdicts and settlements in Illinois. In October 2025Kroot alongside partners Tim Cavanagh and Michael Sorich, secured a $104 million verdict, the largest verdict or settlement in a road construction case in Illinois history. The verdict ended a nine-and-a-half–year legal battle. The jury found the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority negligent in designing and constructing the temporary traffic zone and failing to install required warning signs; key factors in the crash that left their plaintiff Rob Rosā a quadriplegic.

Kroot also secured a record-setting $16.3 million Cook County verdict in an anesthesia malpractice case. Teaming up with Cavanagh and Sorich, he obtained a $12.5 million settlement for an Illinois man who suffered a disabling stroke after being taken off a critical medication.

“Our client is substantially paralyzed and will be in a wheelchair for life,” Kroot said. “His wife had to leave her job to become his full-time caregiver. This settlement will provide them with the high-quality, 24/7 care they need moving forward and the freedom to do the things they’ve always wanted to do.”

While Kroot concentrates on medical malpractice—widely regarded as one of the most challenging areas of personal injury law—his practice also includes auto accidents, premises liability, product liability, and construction injury cases.

One of his most heart-wrenching cases involved the death of a 13-year-old girl who suffered a fatal allergic reaction to peanuts after being served takeout food by her teacher. Despite asking about allergens, a language barrier with the restaurant led to a miscommunication that turned tragic. “The case still makes me extremely sad for the family. No one ever recovers from losing a child,” Kroot said. “But it raised awareness about the dangers of food allergies in schools and helped spark improved safety measures in many districts.”

Throughout his career, Kroot has been honored with distinctions such as the Lawdragon 500 Leading Plaintiff Consumer Lawyer Award and the Illinois Leading Lawyer Award.
