Alston & Bird Adds Health Care Lawyer

WASHINGTON, D.C., MARCH 13, 2013 – Alston & Bird LLP today announced the addition of Dan Elling as a senior policy advisor to its Health Care Group in Washington, D.C.  Elling is perhaps Congress’ most experienced legislative veteran in the health care area, most recently serving as the staff director for the House Ways & Means Health Subcommittee for Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI).  As staff director, he oversaw Medicare and health insurance policy for the Committee Republicans.

Elling joins one of Washington’s broadest teams of policy lawyers and advisors, including a bipartisan collection of four former Members of Congress that includes Senator Bob Dole, the former Majority Leader who was the longest-serving Republican Senate Leader in the history of the United States, Senator Blanche Lincoln, and former Congressmen Billy Tauzin and Earl Pomeroy.  Alston & Bird’s Health Care Group already includes an experienced group of former congressional staff and Administration experts, including a former administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and senior advisors in both the House and Senate, as well as FDA and CMS.

Elling holds a B.A. in political science and history from Gustavus Adolphus College and an M.A. in political management from the George Washington University.

Dan Elling serves as a senior policy advisor for the firm’s Health Care Group in Washington, D.C.  His representation and expertise centers on a myriad of health care legislative issues, including health reform and all its ramifications.

Mr. Elling, an experienced legislative veteran, formerly served as the staff director for the House Ways & Means Health Subcommittee for Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI), a role he previously served in for then-Ranking Member Camp and former Ranking Member Jim McCrery (R-LA); as staff director, he was responsible for all Medicare policy, as well as other health policy, for the Committee Republicans.

Prior to joining the Committee, Mr. Elling served as health policy aide to former Ways & Means Health Subcommittee Chairman Nancy Johnson (R-CT) and legislative assistant to former Health Subcommittee Member Jim Ramstad (R-MN).  Before moving to Washington, Elling developed and analyzed health care research for a market research firm in Minneapolis.
