WASHINGTON, D.C. 4 November 2013 – Hogan Lovells today announced that Michael McTiernan has joined its Corporate practice as a partner. For nearly a decade, McTiernan worked for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) in the Division of Corporate Finance, where he most recently served as Assistant Director of the Real Estate Group.

McTiernan brings to the firm a wealth of experience in federal securities law compliance issues for real estate investment trusts (REITs) and other public companies. He will focus his practice on advising REITs and other real estate companies on securities matters, including in connection with initial public offerings (IPOs), follow-on offerings, mergers and acquisitions, periodic reporting and corporate governance matters, and representing underwriters in connection with securities offerings by REITs and other real estate companies. He also will advise public companies in other sectors on general securities law issues.

“Mike’s extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of the securities law issues impacting the REIT industry is a terrific complement to our well-established REIT practice,” said Warren Gorrell, Co-CEO of Hogan Lovells. “His expertise in federal securities law, combined with his corporate transactional background and securities regulatory experience, will be a huge addition to our Corporate team, both in the REIT area and more broadly.”

During his tenure at the SEC, McTiernan also served as primary advisor to the Chief Counsel on interpretive issues related to the Securities Act, and developed and oversaw the Division of Corporate Finance’s advanced securities law training program. Prior to joining the SEC, McTiernan was an associate at an international law firm in New York where he represented REITs and underwriters in public and private debt and equity offerings and mergers and acquisitions, and advised clients on Exchange Act reporting matters.

“Hogan Lovells has a highly-respected Corporate practice, and is a market leader in the REIT sector,” said McTiernan. “I’m looking forward to bringing my experience in this market to the team and our clients and helping the firm expand its practice.”

McTiernan holds a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. in History from The College of Wooster. He also was a Fulbright Fellow in 2009 and assisted Hong Kong University with a study of the Hong Kong REIT Market.
