MEMPHIS, Tenn., Jan. 29, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Butler Snow is pleased to announce that Jonathan T. Skrmetti has joined the firm's Memphis office. Skrmetti is a member of the firm's Commercial Litigation Practice Group.

Skrmetti joins Butler Snow from the United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Tennessee, where he was the Assistant U.S. Attorney assigned to the Civil Rights Unit. There he investigated and prosecuted federal crimes, including sex trafficking, hate crimes, public corruption, white collar and tax offenses and firearms violations. In addition to his role in the U.S. Attorney's Office, Skrmetti also serves as an adjunct professor of law with the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, where he teaches cyberlaw.  Previously, he served as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Criminal Section and also as the Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. He received numerous awards and recognitions during his time as a federal prosecutor, including the prestigious Attorney General's Award for Distinguished Service. Skrmetti also served as a law clerk for Judge Steven Colloton on U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

Skrmetti completed his undergraduate education at George Washington University before going on to earn an additional bachelor's degree at Oxford University, and his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School, where he served as editor-in-chief for the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy.
