WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 3, 2014 – Troutman Sanders LLP announced today that Brent Fewell has joined the firm as a partner in the Environmental and Natural Resources practice in the Washington, D.C. office.  Most recently, Fewell was Senior Vice President for Environmental Health and Safety at United Water, Inc., a subsidiary of Suez Environnement, an international waste and water company.  Prior to his time in private industry, Fewell was the Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Office of Water at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the second highest water official at the EPA.

Fewell has the unique experience of handling environmental matters both from a corporate and government perspective.  While at United Water, Fewell oversaw the development and implementation of all facets of the company’s environmental compliance and health, safety and security programs for more than 150 wastewater operations.  At EPA, Fewell was responsible for overseeing the country’s national drinking water and clean water programs, as well as managing the Office of Water’s $2.8 billion dollar budget.  Prior to United Water, he was Of Counsel at Hunton & Williams.

“Having served in government, as a corporate executive and in private practice, Brent brings a truly unique insight to environmental problem-solving, and we are fortunate to have him join our team,” said Randy Brogdon, a partner in the firm’s Environmental and Natural Resources Practice.  “His experience managing nationwide environmental auditing and compliance programs will provide real value to our clients.”

“One of the things that impressed us about Brent is the depth of knowledge and pragmatic problem solving skills he brings to the full spectrum of environmental issues,” said Amie Colby, office managing partner of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.  “His understanding of both the corporate and governmental perspective on these issues enables Brent to give incisive, practical and solutions-oriented advice to our clients in a range of different industry sectors. We are glad he’s joined us in Washington.”

Fewell serves on the Board of Directors for the U.S. Water Alliance and is chair of the group’s Business Advisory Council and is the former chair of the In-House Counsel Committee for the American Bar Association’s Environment, Energy and Resources Section.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maine and his Master of Environmental Management degree from Duke University.  He is a graduate of the Duquesne University School of Law.

“One of the things that is really appealing about Troutman Sanders is the firm’s integrated team approach to working on client matters,” said Fewell.  “Standards and regulations regarding environmental compliance are constantly changing, and I am looking forward to working with this team to help our clients meet those challenges.”
