Washington, D.C. — Sidley Austin LLP announced today that David B. Barlow, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah, will rejoin Sidley as a partner this summer. Mr. Barlow will reside in Sidley’s Washington, D.C. office and will focus his practice on the service of the firm’s life sciences clients.

Mr. Barlow originally joined Sidley in 2000 and became a partner in 2006. During his time at Sidley, he handled a wide variety of cases, with particular emphasis on pharmaceutical, medical device, and mass tort matters.

Mr. Barlow was nominated by President Obama and unanimously confirmed by the Senate as U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah in September 2011. Prior to his service as U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah, Mr. Barlow served as Senator Mike Lee’s Chief Counsel on the Judiciary Committee. In his role as U.S. Attorney, Mr. Barlow led an office of approximately 50 assistant and special assistant U.S. Attorneys who represented the United States in criminal prosecutions and civil litigation. During his tenure, the office conducted thousands of investigations and prosecutions together with the FBI, IRS, Secret Service, DEA, ATF and many other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.  Mr. Barlow personally participated in investigations, Grand Jury indictments, plea negotiations, and criminal trials during his service as U.S. Attorney.

In March 2013, Attorney General Holder asked Mr. Barlow to serve on the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee, his leadership team of select U.S. Attorneys across the country. In this capacity, Mr. Barlow has spent approximately 20 percent of his time working on national issues and advising the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General on policy, management and operational issues. Mr. Barlow also serves on the Health Care Fraud Working Group, the White Collar Crime Subcommittee and chairs the Local Government Coordination Working Group.

“We are delighted to welcome David back to Sidley,” said Mark Hopson, managing partner of Sidley’s Washington, D.C. office and a member of the firm’s Management Committee. “The insight and experiences David has gained during his time in the Department of Justice will be immensely valuable to our clients.”

“His previous work on behalf of our clients coupled with the extensive experience he’s gained since his tenure here will make David an exceptional addition to our existing team of lawyers focused on the defense of life science companies,” said Michael W. Davis, partner, secretary of Sidley’s Executive Committee and a co-global coordinator of Sidley’s Life Sciences Practice. “Life sciences are at the core of David’s legal experience and expertise. David is highly-regarded and we could not be more pleased that he is returning to the firm,” Mr. Davis added.
