Friedman has joined the firm’s White Plains office as Shareholder. Mr. Friedman, who was previously a Member of Epstein Becker & Green, P.C.’s Employee Benefits practice, brings to Jackson Lewis over 30 years of experience litigating ERISA issues before United States bankruptcy courts, district courts and courts of appeal on behalf of employers, plan sponsors and fiduciaries across a wide range of industries.

Mr. Friedman, who has served as litigation counsel on behalf of numerous multiemployer and single-employer employee benefit plans in ERISA matters, devotes a substantial portion of his practice to the defense of employers, plan sponsors, fiduciaries and financial institutions against claims brought under ERISA by benefit funds, plan beneficiaries and the United States Department of Labor on a myriad of issues relating to breach of fiduciary duties, excessive plan expenses, benefit entitlement issues, retiree health benefits and functional fiduciary liability.

He regularly defends employers that have been assessed withdrawal liability under the Multiemployer Pension Plan Amendments Act of 1980 or have experienced increased liability due to the passage of the Pension Protection Act of 2006. Mr. Friedman also performs employee benefits due diligence for buyers or sellers in mergers and acquisitions transactions.

Mr. Friedman has served as a member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey Ethics Committee and as the ERISA coordinator of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association. He has advised Congress on proposed benefits legislation and has lectured on benefits law to the United States Department of Labor, the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries, and American Law Institute of the American Bar Association.

Mr. Friedman is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, New Jersey and New York. He received his J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law and his B.A. from Rutgers University.
