Detroit – November 12, 2014 – Dykema, a leading national law firm, announced today that Bonnie Mayfield received the Women of Color Achievement Award from the 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit, in partnership with the Women Presidents’ Organization (WPO).

Mayfield was one of a select group of honorees who received the award at a special reception on Oct. 29. The recipients are a small group of powerful women from a variety of industries who have made a significant impact and are exceptional role models. Each was recognized for her distinguished success as an accomplished leader and exemplary service to the community.

“Being a part of this group of phenomenal women is truly an honor,” said Mayfield, who was the only attorney to receive the award.

In addition to her impressive track record as a trial and appellate attorney, Mayfield is the Vice Chair of Diversity Initiatives for the International Association of Defense Counsel’s Diversity Committee. Significantly, Mayfield’s writings and speaking activities teach individuals and organizations how to recognize and systemically overcome unconscious bias, and advance diversity and inclusion. She recently co-authored an article—“Tangible Results Speak Louder Than Well-Intentioned Diversity And Inclusion Words”—that identifies concrete steps to help embrace women and women of color, thereby leading to sustained positive diversity and inclusion outcomes.

The 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit, Inc. is dedicated to improving the quality of life within the community and enhancing educational and economic opportunities for all African-Americans. The WPO is a non-profit membership organization for women owners and leaders of multimillion-dollar companies.

Based in the firm’s Bloomfield Hills office, Mayfield is a member of the Litigation and Labor & Employment Law practice groups. She has successfully litigated product liability and labor and employment matters for a variety of clients. Mayfield is also one of 28 lawyers on Dykema’s National Trial Team, which was launched in March, 2014. She recently co-led a trial team that obtained a nearly $225,000 restitution award for a victim of human trafficking.

Mayfield received her B.A. from Dillard University and her J.D. from New York University School of Law where she was a member of the NYU Law Review. After receiving her degrees, she clerked on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
