SAN FRANCISCO, December 15, 2014 — Goodwin Procter, a leading Am Law 50 and Global 50 law firm, announced today that Brett M. Schuman has joined the firm as a partner in its IP Litigation Group in San Francisco. Schuman will also spend significant time in Goodwin’s Silicon Valley office. He comes to the firm from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, where he led that firm’s litigation practice in its San Francisco and Palo Alto offices and was deputy leader of its IP practice.

Schuman focuses his practice on patent cases on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants across the technology industry. He serves as lead partner and lead trial counsel in patent infringement litigation matters involving mobile phone technology, broadband communications technology, semiconductor fabrication and circuitry, wearables and pharmaceuticals. He has also served as lead counsel in several litigations involving patent license agreements.

“Brett is the seventh partner to join our IP Litigation Group in the past three months,” said Douglas Kline, chair of Goodwin’s IP Litigation Group. “We are excited to have Brett join our dynamic, growing practice. His tremendous experience in high-stakes intellectual property disputes makes him a great addition to our team and an asset to the clients that we serve.”

Schuman is admitted to practice in California, as well as before U.S. District Courts in California, Texas, Virginia and Delaware. Prior to beginning his private practice, Schuman served as a law clerk to the Honorable Alan B. Handler of the Supreme Court of the State of New Jersey.

“We are thrilled Brett will be joining us in San Francisco,” said Bradley Bugdanowitz, chair of Goodwin’s San Francisco office. “His addition, together with Shane Brun’s, further strengthens our capacity to deliver exceptional service to our clients here in California.”

Schuman received his B.A. from the University of Michigan and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. He can be reached at bschuman@goodwinprocter.com or (415) 733-6021.

Schuman’s addition to Goodwin Procter’s IP Litigation Group follows that of Shane Brun in San Francisco four weeks ago and a five partner team from Kenyon & Kenyon in September.

Ranked by Corporate Counsel as one of the nation’s most active patent litigation practices, Goodwin’s Patent Litigation Practice draws on the firm’s more than 150 IP attorneys and scientists dedicated to actively protecting and promoting client assets. Goodwin routinely works with clients to take cases from pre-suit investigations through discovery proceedings and trials, and its attorneys provide counsel on infringement, validity and patentability issues, and when necessary, litigate patents in federal district courts throughout the country.
