AUSTIN (February 9, 2015)— Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announced today that Lino Mendiola III has joined the firm’s Energy, Environmental and Commodities Practice Group as a partner in the Austin office. Prior to joining Sutherland, Mr. Mendiola was co-managing partner of the Austin office of Andrews Kurth LLP.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Lino to Sutherland as we continue to expand our leading energy and environmental practice with top-notch legal talent,” said Sutherland Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “Lino adds further depth and breadth to our practice, which is nationally recognized for bringing deep industry knowledge to energy regulation and litigation matters.”

With more than 20 years of commercial litigation experience, Mr. Mendiola represents energy clients in state and federal court and before the Public Utility Commission of Texas and other state agencies. A native of south Texas, Mr. Mendiola frequently represents clients in south Texas state courts.

“This is an exciting time for both our energy and environmental practice and the Austin office. Lino is the third lateral addition to our Energy, Environmental and Commodities Practice Group this year,” said Sean D. Jordan, Partner in Charge of Sutherland’s Austin office. “Bringing Lino on board highlights the firm’s continued commitment to expand our strength in Texas to meet the needs of our energy clients.”

Mr. Mendiola counsels clients in both transactional and litigation matters involving energy and regulatory law with a focus on the Texas electric energy and natural gas markets. His transactional experience includes handling regulatory issues, such as pipeline regulation and transmission line routing matters. He also frequently counsels clients on state and federal contracting and procurement law.

“As a firm, our strategy is to expand our leading practices that serve clients in key industries, and the addition of Lino clearly advances that strategy,” said Sutherland’s Energy, Environmental and Commodities Practice Group Leader Herbert J. Short, Jr.

Sutherland’s addition of Mr. Mendiola is the latest step in the firm’s expansion of its leading Energy, Environmental and Commodities Practice Group, and in particular its Texas energy practice in Houston and Austin. In January, the group welcomed Counsel Travis C. McCullough, resident in the firm’s Houston office, from J.P. Morgan and Counsel James A. Thompson, Jr., resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, from Pepper Hamilton LLP.

Sutherland’s Energy, Environmental and Commodities Practice Group includes more than 70 lawyers who act for crude oil, natural gas, LNG, electric power, electric cooperative, renewable and alternative energy, oil pipeline and nuclear energy clients. The practice expanded internationally in March 2014 by combining with Arbis LLP in London and Geneva.
