December 7, 2015 – DLA Piper announced today that Sherman Chu, Cisco’s former general counsel in China and head of worldwide technology transactions, has joined the firm as a partner in the Corporate practice in Northern California, resident in the Silicon Valley office.

Chu will focus on China inbound and outbound transactions, as well as technology industry transactions. His time with Cisco provides him experience with technology licensing, intellectual property, complex and cross-border transactions, open source software, cloud, compliance and emerging markets.

“Sherman’s strong technology industry background and transactional experience around the world, particularly in China and Silicon Valley, provide us another opportunity to build our global legal practice,” said Jay Smith, global co-chair of DLA Piper’s Corporate practice. “He has a record of helping businesses scale globally by building results-oriented legal teams and is highly qualified to provide strategic advice to senior business executives.”

“Sherman’s experience will be enormously beneficial to our clients given the complex legal, regulatory and political environment in China,” said Sang Kim, DLA Piper’s regional managing partner in Northern California and co-chair of the US Tax practice.

While in China, Chu was also elected vice chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. He received his B.S. in electrical engineering and B.A. from Columbia University, and his J.D. from New York University School of Law.

Chu is the most recent addition to DLA Piper in Northern California, following employee benefits and executive compensation partner Cisco Palao-Ricketts; litigation partner Mark McKeen; international tax partner Idan Netser; real state partner Lynn Cadwalader, corporate and M&A lawyer Brian Wheeler; corporate and M&A lawyer Louis Lehot; outsourcing lawyer Adam Sak; venture capital lawyer Jonathan Axelrad; information and electronic data lawyer Amor Esteban; white collar lawyer Lisa Tenorio-Kutzkey; former venture capitalist Tom Furlong; and former general counsel of Apple and Oracle, Daniel Cooperman.
