NEW YORK, NY (January 20, 2016) – Perkins Coie is pleased to announce that William J. McCabe, Gene W. Lee, and Martin E. Gilmore have joined the firm’s Intellectual Property (IP) practice in New York. Bill and Gene, formerly of Ropes & Gray LLP, join the firm as partners; Martin joins as senior counsel from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP.

Bill has nearly three decades of experience with patent infringement and trade secret actions, licensing and post-grant proceedings. He has represented U.S., European, and Asian companies in high-stakes patent litigation and counseling matters, from New York to Europe to Tokyo and Seoul, including one patent trial widely viewed as the biggest defense win in U.S. patent litigation history. His experience spans a variety of industries, including telecommunications, optics, semiconductors, software, medical records, energy, chemical engineering and electrochromics. Bill earned a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and a B.S. in chemical engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Gene has more than 20 years of experience representing clients in complex patent litigation matters in the federal courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), including inter partes reviews and interferences. He also works on trade secret, copyright, trademark, and unfair competition matters. Gene’s work has covered a wide range of technologies, including computer systems and software, telecommunications and wireless communications, medical devices, videogames, audio processing, financial services, chemistry, semiconductors, and geoscience. Gene received a J.D. from Cornell Law School and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Columbia University.
Martin has significant experience representing clients in patent, trademark and unfair competition actions, as well as in general commercial disputes. He has represented clients before federal and state courts at the agency, trial and appellate levels. Martin’s patent work has involved a broad range of technologies, including wireless communications, networking, semiconductors, digital signal processing, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals. In addition to his IP litigation experience, Martin has also represented clients in multiple civil and criminal investigations. Martin earned a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, a M. Eng. in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University and a B.E. (cum laude) in biomedical and electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University.
