New York, 12 December 2016 – Mayer Brown announced today that Bryan Barreras has joined the firm’s New York office as a partner in the global Banking & Finance and Fund Finance practices. A seasoned in-house and hedge fund financing lawyer, Mr. Barreras most recently served as executive vice president of operations for a tech start-up.

From 2008 to mid-2015, Mr. Barreras served as director and counsel in the legal department of the New York branch of Société Générale, where he managed a team of lawyers that provided legal coverage for the hedge fund and registered fund financing and derivatives businesses, structured notes program, proprietary index-linked structured products, insurance-linked products and asset-backed financing business. Mr. Barreras and his team structured, negotiated and executed hedge fund secured financing transactions and ISDA-based derivatives transactions linked to hedge funds, bonds and indices, in the form of credit facilities, pre-paid forwards, notes, options and total return swaps, and they advised on all aspects of transaction execution and acquisition of the bank’s hedges.

“As one of the industry’s leading hedge fund financing lawyers, we’re excited to welcome Bryan to the team as we continue to bolster our hedge fund and fund of funds financing capabilities,” said Zac Barnett, leader of the firm’s global Fund Finance practice. “In light of newly implemented regulations, the industry is exploring a variety of structures and Bryan’s extensive in-house experience, coupled with his knowledge of derivatives and alternative bank financing, will be of great advantage to our diverse base of sophisticated clients.”

Prior to his tenure at Société Générale, Mr. Barreras held similar in-house roles at other financial institutions in New York, including serving as managing director in XE Capital Management’s structuring and real estate groups and as director in the legal group at BNP Paribas and Zurich Capital Markets.

“I am excited to join Mayer Brown’s well-recognized Fund Finance practice,” said Mr. Barreras. “The firm’s finance capabilities and my hedge fund financing experience complement each other and I look forward to leveraging the firm’s premier global platform to effectively and efficiently serve our broad client base.”

Mr. Barreras began his legal career in private practice. He earned his JD from the New York University School of Law and his MBA and BS from the University of Houston. During his time in Houston, Mr. Barreras worked as a mechanical engineer for a petrochemical manufacturing and oil refining company.

Richard Spehr, partner-in-charge of Mayer Brown’s New York office, said, “Bryan’s arrival greatly enhances our fund finance capabilities in New York and across the globe and solidifies Mayer Brown’s expanding New York office as a destination of choice for market-leading, world-class legal talent.”
