Gregory E. Fosheim, an accomplished healthcare and life sciences attorney and former public health microbiologist, has joined McGuireWoods as a partner in Chicago.
Fosheim counsels healthcare providers, health systems, physician practice management companies, clinical laboratories and life sciences clients on transactional and operational matters, with a focus on regulatory requirements, licensing, accreditation, and policy considerations. He also advises on clinical and diagnostic laboratory issues, anatomic pathology and fertility laboratory compliance, drawing on his extensive science and public health background.
Fosheim is a prolific writer and speaker on healthcare nondiscrimination requirements, including those arising under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and related state nondiscrimination laws. He advises healthcare entities on compliance with evolving federal guidelines and executive orders, as well as rights of conscience and moral-objection protections. Fosheim comes to McGuireWoods from McDermott Will & Schulte.
Before his legal career, Fosheim was a microbiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, where he advised and trained hospital and public health laboratories on infection control and clinical testing standards. He also served as a principal researcher in the epidemiology of MRSA infections.
“Greg’s legal acumen and hands-on scientific experience at the CDC make him an invaluable resource for healthcare and life sciences clients navigating today's complex regulatory environment,” said Richard W. Viola, deputy managing partner of McGuireWoods’ corporate practice.
Holly Buckley, chair of McGuireWoods' Healthcare Department, said, “Greg is exactly the type of strategic thinker healthcare and life sciences clients need. His proven track record in transactional and regulatory matters and first-hand knowledge of laboratory operations will be tremendous assets to our team and the clients we serve.”
McGuireWoods has earned numerous honors, including a nationwide ranking in Chambers USA, for representing healthcare and life sciences clients in major corporate transactions, as well as regulatory and compliance matters. The firm is a dominant player in private equity deals involving physician practices, hospitals, outpatient and urgent-care providers, laboratories, pharmacies, medical device manufacturers and distributors, and other healthcare services.
“I am excited to join McGuireWoods and continue helping healthcare and life sciences clients achieve their business goals,” said Fosheim. “The firm's deep bench of talented attorneys and strong commitment to the healthcare industry create an ideal platform to deliver innovative solutions and exceptional client service.”
