Mao is one of Boies Schiller's first chairs in high-stakes consumer and antitrust litigation against Google, where he successfully obtained three separate national class certifications. These included two contested certifications for privacy misuse – which created law and precedent that were the first of their kind – and certification of antitrust claims on behalf of a national class of online publishers. Mao then obtained a $425 million trial verdict against Google in September 2025 in one of these cases. On the defense side, Mao defeated the first European General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR) class action in the U.S., styled as Elliott v. PubMatic, involving a large adtech platform.
He has successfully defended numerous organizations through difficult high-stakes IP disputes, including patent, trade secret, and copyright and trademark litigation. He has experience in a broad spectrum of data-driven products, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomous vehicles, shared/gig economies, internet of things, smart infrastructure, real-time targeting technologies, digital media, augmented and virtual reality, gaming, fintech, blockchain technology, and security software and hardware.
Mao was previously an IT consultant at Arthur Andersen Consulting LLP, implementing database software. Mao is a proud first-generation immigrant from Taiwan and is fully fluent in Mandarin Chinese. He has served as outside counsel for some of Asia’s largest international companies.
