Kathleen Egan is not one of those people who always knew that they wanted to be an attorney. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in psychology, she still had no idea what she wanted to do for the rest of my life. So she did what she do best: she went on an adventure. Egan decided to take a year off, develop her passions, and move to New York. While in New York, Egan sat in on a law school class with a friend. It struck a chord, and Egan's passion for law began. She started studying for the LSAT and eventually started law school at Touro Law School.
Egan's three years in law school were some of the best times of her life, not only because of her amazing teachers and lifelong friendships but because it developed a sense of wonder in her and changed her way of thinking about complex issues. But despite all its teachings, when Egan graduated from law school she had the same issue she had after undergrad. Egan had no idea what type of law she wanted to practice. They were all so fascinating – how could she choose just one! Luckily, the practice of family law found her, as Egan was offered a position at a high-end boutique law firm on Long Island that practiced exclusively family law.
Starting her career in New York was not easy. New York judges are tough and Egan's colleagues, mostly older men, were not always welcoming. But those years gave her a strength that she carries with her today. It also taught Egan professionalism, reverence, and respect, not just for colleagues and the judges she practice in front of but for the institution itself.
