Advocacy on Behalf of Afghans
Following the collapse of the Afghan government and the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, Nasiri became deeply involved in the nationwide legal response on behalf of displaced Afghans.
As a member of AILA's Afghan Response Task Force, she worked alongside immigration attorneys, advocates, nonprofit organizations, and government stakeholders to address the unprecedented immigration challenges facing Afghan evacuees and families left behind.
During the Afghan evacuation and resettlement response, Nasiri traveled to seven U.S. military installations housing newly evacuated Afghans, providing immigration information and legal assistance to families navigating an extraordinarily complicated and uncertain immigration process. Her fluency in Pashto and Dari, combined with her own Afghan immigrant background, enabled her to communicate directly with newly arrived families and understand both the legal and human dimensions of their displacement.
Her advocacy has continued well beyond the immediate evacuation. She has worked extensively to educate Afghan communities about humanitarian parole, asylum, Special Immigrant Visas, family reunification, Temporary Protected Status, adjustment of status, immigration policy changes, and other legal pathways affecting displaced Afghans.
Nasiri has also participated in national advocacy efforts seeking durable legal protections for Afghan evacuees and other vulnerable Afghan populations.
Legal Scholarship and USC Gould School of Law Collaboration
Nasiri's contributions extend beyond direct representation and advocacy to immigration legal scholarship and practitioner education.
She collaborated with the University of Southern California Gould School of Law International Human Rights Clinic, AILA, and Human Rights First on an extensive practitioner resource addressing representation of Afghan nationals and individuals evacuated through Operation Allies Welcome.
The resulting guide, “Best Practices and Resources for Representing Operation Allies Welcome Parolees and Afghan Nationals,” was developed to provide immigration attorneys and advocates with practical guidance for representing newly arrived Afghans confronting complex immigration issues.
Nasiri was identified as a primary author of the resource alongside Professor Henna Pithia of the USC Gould School of Law International Human Rights Clinic, with contributions from clinic student attorneys and members of AILA's Afghan Response Task Force.
She has also authored and contributed to immigration law practice advisories, educational resources, and practitioner materials designed to assist immigration attorneys in navigating rapidly evolving areas of immigration law and policy.
Commitment to Immigrant Families and Community
Throughout her career, Nasiri has remained committed to the principle that immigration law is fundamentally about people, families, and human dignity.
Her personal journey as an Afghan immigrant and her own childhood experience of separation from her mother have profoundly influenced her approach to the practice of law. Those experiences allow her to understand the fear, uncertainty, and emotional toll that immigration proceedings can impose on families.
Whether representing an individual client, assisting newly arrived refugees, educating fellow attorneys, advocating for immigration policy reform, or providing reliable legal information to communities confronting rapidly changing immigration policies, Nasiri has consistently sought to combine legal excellence with compassion and service.
Fluent in Pashto, and Dari, Nasiri remains a prominent voice within the immigrant-rights and Afghan American communities. Her career reflects an enduring commitment to protecting immigrant families, expanding access to competent legal representation, strengthening the legal profession, and ensuring that immigrants and refugees are treated with dignity and fairness under the law.
