One of the biggest legal stories of the year so far is the estimated $7.8B settlement reached between BP and the plaintiffs injured by the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Not surprisingly, a key player in the settlement is a member of the 2011 Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America – plaintiffs’ attorney Stephen Herman of Herman, Herman, Katz & Cotlar in New Orleans, whose firm we have recognized over the years for their important and high-profile litigaiton work.

As the article in the Times notes, Herman led the plaintiffs’ steering committee along with James P. Roy of Domengeaux, Wright, Roy & Edwards, a previous Lawdragon Finalist.

The battle continues for BP, as the settlement did not include claims being pursued by the U.S. government, as well as state and local governments.
