New York, 9 April 2013Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that Michael Martinez has joined the firm in New York as a partner in its Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice and White Collar Defense & Compliance group. Previously, he was the Executive Assistant United States Attorney in the US Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, the office’s third-highest ranking position.

“Mike’s proven track record in handling a wide array of high-level white collar matters will add further depth to our capabilities in this area,” said Steven Wolowitz, co-leader of Mayer Brown’s global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice. “His experience in litigation related to financial services, health care, pharmaceuticals and intellectual property, coupled with his work in the appellate arena, perfectly complements our existing practice.”

Mr. Martinez’s decade-long career with the US Attorney’s Office in New Jersey included two terms of duty. From 2000 – 2008, he worked in the office’s Appeals Division, Government Fraud Unit, and Securities and Health Care Fraud Unit, then served as acting chief of the Terrorism Unit. During this time, he wrote appellate briefs in more than 50 cases, argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 10 cases and successfully tried the case against Walter Forbes, former Chairman of Cendant Corporation, which resulted in a 12- year sentence in the largest accounting fraud of the 1990s.

In 2008, Mr. Martinez joined Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel in New York as a special counsel, representing individuals and corporations in a variety of criminal

and civil investigations. He returned to the US Attorney’s Office in New Jersey two years later, where he developed, reorganized and managed the office’s white collar programs, supervised 145 attorneys in all criminal and civil cases brought by the office and coordinated with partner investigative agencies and the US Justice Department’s Civil Division in investigating and prosecuting white collar cases.

“In returning to private practice, I was looking to join a leading litigation practice with an elite team of white collar practitioners,” Mr. Martinez said. “Mayer Brown fit that description perfectly, and I welcome the opportunity to add my skills and experience to the firm’s outstanding global capabilities in the white collar arena.”

Richard Spehr, partner-in-charge of Mayer Brown’s New York office, said, “Mike is known throughout the legal industry as a first-rate trial lawyer and is a strong addition to our litigation team in New York. Clients here and across our global network will benefit from the unique perspective he has gained from his extensive experience in both public and private practice.”

Earlier in his career, Mr. Martinez clerked for The Honorable Samuel A. Alito, Jr., in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He earned a JD from Yale Law School and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Brown University.
