NEW YORK — Feb. 25, 2014 — Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, announced that Arunabha Bhoumik has joined the New York office as a partner in the Litigation Division. Bhoumik comes to the firm from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), where he was a prosecutor in the Fraud Section of the Criminal Division.

While working at the DOJ, Bhoumik investigated and prosecuted matters involving fraud, false claims, money laundering and violations of the Anti-Kickback Statute in the healthcare industry, often serving as the lead prosecutor on complex investigations.

“With the wholesale transformation of our healthcare system fully underway, healthcare litigation is on the rise and the complexity of cases is growing,” said Matt Kanny, chair of the firm’s national Litigation Division. “Arun is a highly skilled litigator whose experience trying federal cases laced with hot-button issues important to our clients makes him a strong addition to the team. We’re excited to have Arun back at Manatt.”

Bhoumik served as lead prosecutor in numerous grand jury investigations and prosecutions, including the investigation of a mental health provider with approximately $300 million in billings to Medicare, and the prosecution of the owner and employees of several related home health agencies and other medical providers who engaged in a $50 million scheme to defraud Medicare.

Bhoumik’s addition is the latest in a series of new Manatt partners in February, including top entertainment litigator John Gatti in Los Angeles and noted financial services litigator Andrew Zimmitti in Washington, D.C.

Prior to joining DOJ, Bhoumik worked as an associate at Manatt, where he represented individuals and entities in a variety of commercial lawsuits and government investigations, including matters involving healthcare fraud, securities fraud and public corruption.

“After a rewarding experience in the public sector, the decision on where to resume my private practice was both important and fairly simple. If the opportunity presented itself, I wanted to return to Manatt,” Bhoumik said. “The firm has a well-deserved reputation for superior litigation capabilities and sophisticated work in the areas of white-collar defense and investigations. The knowledge I gained while working as an associate under the guidance of Manatt litigators was invaluable during my time at the Justice Department. I’m excited to return with new insights and look forward to again working alongside this distinguished team.”

Manatt’s Litigation Division combines aggressive, creative litigation talent with a deep knowledge of the industries and practice areas in which its clients operate — advertising, healthcare, entertainment, energy, financial services, intellectual property and real estate. The firm pairs its clients with a team of trial lawyers who know what it takes to win in the courtroom and who know their industry, enabling them to achieve unparalleled successes for clients. Manatt’s litigators include some of the top trial and appellate lawyers in the United States. The firm’s attorneys regularly manage “bet the company” litigation involving virtually every substantive area of business law. They also understand and have long experience in dealing with “parallel proceedings” involving regulatory, administrative, criminal and civil issues simultaneously.

Bhoumik earned his B.A., summa cum laude, from Binghamton University and his J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School.
