ATLANTA, Sept. 24 -- The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Todd S. McClelland has joined its Atlanta Office as a partner in the Firm's Intellectual Property Practice. Mr. McClelland, who was previously a partner in Alston & Bird's Atlanta office, focuses his practice on privacy and data security issues.

"Todd is a highly-regarded lawyer with substantial experience in cyber security and data privacy, areas that continue to garner widespread attention among our clients," said Richard H. Deane, Jr., Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Atlanta Office. "His arrival will enhance substantially our ability to address these growing and evolving business challenges. We are pleased that he is joining us."

Mr. McClelland advises clients on incident response and other information security-related issues, with particular experience in PCI/payment system compliance, HIPAA-related incidents, critical infrastructure security, global privacy compliance, risk assessments, and intellectual property theft. He also represents clients in connection with information technology and business process outsourcing, IP licensing and audits, and cloud transactions.

"In addition to the growing demands for data privacy and security compliance in the health care industry, virtually every company operates under the threat of a cyber breach, and quite a few have to deal with their aftermath," said Anthony Insogna, Chair of Jones Day's global Intellectual Property Practice. "Todd's unusual amalgam of IP and security technology capabilities will be immensely valuable to clients not just in the Southeast but around the world."

His specific experience has included advising hospitals, payment processors, retailers, financial institutions, and others in connection with both response to data security incidents and proactive preparation, advising a top tier pharmaceutical company in connection with the outsourcing of its IT environment and its global privacy compliance, representing a global transportation company in outsourcing components of its IT platform, international F&A functions, ADM functions, and other business functions, representing one of the largest big-box home improvement stores in the outsourcing of infrastructure management services, and advising a large independent power producer in connection with the sourcing of multiple HR and IT processes.

"Data privacy and security, both how to engineer global compliance with complex and emerging legal requirements into the company’s infrastructure and how to respond when faced with a cyber incident, plays a significant role in the way businesses operate today. Global businesses face significant challenges as the role of technology and information assets continues to expand," said Mauricio Paez, co-chair of the Jones Day's global Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice. "Todd brings significant knowledge and experience in these areas to a group of over 60 professionals all over the world at Jones Day. Todd’s addition will help us provide even more sophisticated legal solutions to clients facing data privacy and cybersecurity legal issues."

Mr. McClelland received his J.D. in 1998 from Florida State University where he was a member of the Law Review and executive editor of the Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law. He received his B.S. in mechanical engineering, with high honors, in 1994 from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to law school, Mr. McClelland worked as an engineer designing automation systems for companies such as Coca-Cola and the Ford Motor Company. A frequent speaker and author on cybersecurity, active defense, security incidents, global data privacy compliance, smart grid, cloud computing, and IP protection, Mr. McClelland has been featured in Chambers USA, is recognized by Best Lawyers for Privacy and Data Security Law, and is the past chair of the IP Section of the State Bar of Georgia.
