A partner in Paul, Weiss's Bankruptcy and Corporate Reorganization Department, Jeff Saferstein practices exclusively in the areas of corporate restructurings and workouts, bankruptcy and specialized financings.

Experience

Jeff has been involved in major domestic and international restructurings and bankruptcies, including:

  • Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company and its affiliates in their prepackaged chapter 11 cases involving the restructuring of over $3 billion in debt;
  • School Specialty, Inc. and its affiliates in all aspects of their chapter 11 cases;
  • a wide range of matters for several fund clients in the Lehman Brothers chapter 11 case;
  • Buffets, Inc. and its affiliates in their chapter 11 cases;
  • AbitibiBowater in the company's complex U.S. and Canadian cross-border bankruptcy cases involving the restructuring of more than $8 billion of prepetition indebtedness and raising $1.5 billion of exit financing;
  • Samsonite Corporation in its worldwide out-of-court restructuring. In connection with the representation, we also represented Samsonite Company Stores in its successful prepackaged chapter 11 case;
  • Alpha Media Group, publisher of Maxim Magazine, in connection with its out-of-court restructuring;
  • Thomas Nelson, Inc. in its out-of-court restructuring;
  • Time Warner Cable in connection with its $17.6 billion acquisition, together with Comcast Corporation, of Adelphia Communications Corporation;
  • Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. in its out-of-court restructuring;
  • Loehmann's in connection with its chapter 11 case; and
  • The Penn Traffic Company in connection with its chapter 11 case.

He has also recently been involved in several restructurings of structured investment vehicles and in a workout of one of the monoline insurers.

Jeff has written and lectured on numerous bankruptcy topics including co-writing an article for the International Financial Law Review titled "Get Your Priorities Straight" (March 2012), co-writing an article for the New York Law Journal titled "When Second Lien Lenders Break Their Silence" (October 2007), and co-writing an article for the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal titled "Equitable Subordination: Good-Faith Transferees Beware" (April 2006). Jeff recently spoke at the Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors' 11th Annual Advanced Restructuring & Plan of Reorganization Conference. He has also spoken on panels sponsored by Bloomberg L.P. on Distressed Debt and Bankruptcies and at the New York City Bar Association and at the Wharton Restructuring and Turnaround Conference on "Governmental Involvement in Distressed Opportunities" and "The Rise of Out-of-Court Restructurings and Pre-Packaged Bankruptcies". He has been named in Chambers USAAmerica's Leading Lawyers for Business, The Legal 500The Best Lawyers in America and IFLR1000 as a leading practitioner in the bankruptcy field and to Lawdragon's 3000 Leading Lawyers in America.
